Using Mobile Phones to Improve Information for Brazil's Fishermen

Brazilian mobile network operator, Vivo has launched a service that provides useful information to fishermen. The service has been launched in partnership with Qualcomm, Instituto Ambiental Brasil Sustentável (IABS), USAID, ZTE and the municipality of Santa Cruz Cabrália.
Fishing is one of the primary economic activities in the region with many families depending on it for their livelihood, but recently, the industry has suffered from over-fishing, lack of investment and old infrastructure. As a result, incomes have decreased for the local municipality and people, which has led to reduced opportunities and a migration of family members in search of jobs. This project comes at a time when the fishermen of Santa Cruz Cabrália need to modernize their operations and institutionalize sustainable fishing tactics.
As part of the project, participants have been given mobile devices with mobile credit to access to Vivo's 3G network. Customized software applications were built to provide them with navigation, weather, marketing, direct sales, data collection and technical support; therefore fishermen have support for their activities with real-time analysis and relevant information.
"Our work with the municipality of Santa Cruz Cabrália, ZTE, USAID, IABS and Vivo has allowed fishermen and farmers in these underserved communities to gain access to information that will improve their trade," said Peggy Johnson, executive vice president for the Americas and India for Qualcomm.
In addition to the provided devices, training centers have been established in the town of Santa Cruz Cabrália and on a boat which is able to reach and train more remote fishing communities.
"We appreciate the kind assistance of Qualcomm, Vivo, USAID, ZTE and the municipality of Santa Cruz Cabrália," said André Macedo Brügger, interim president of Fishing with 3G Nets at Instituto Ambiental Brasil Sustentável. "This project supports workers in modernizing their business and sustainability practices and will ultimately foster economic growth in our communities."
In addition to extending coverage - the urban area of Santa Cruz Cabrália already has Vivo's 3G coverage - Vivo has donated devices and data services to be used on the boats and at the computer lab built at the Fisherman House, headquarters of the region's fishermen association.

Mobile shopping startup CheckPoints gets $1M in funding

Take a poll of chief marketing and merchandising officers for major U.S. retailers and chances are that many would have no idea what a QR code is or how to use one.
While consumers are responding to QR codes popping up in magazines inviting them to learn more about products, this activity is being driven more by manufacturers than retailers. In truth, consumers – or more accurately, shoppers – are driving the mobile Web and connectivity phenomenon. To date, there is no strong influence from retail putting any emphasis or resources against this consumer trend.
Retail detail
A recent white paper from Forbes Insights makes the point that nearly half of retailers want to gain first-mover advantage in the mobile space, although we have yet to see this intent manifest itself at the shelf. Marketers should be embracing this opportunity for two reasons.
First, consumers today are using mobile technology and QR codes. This is an activity that is only going to gain acceptance and raise the expectation from shoppers.
Second, the growing preference by shoppers to use their mobile devices as a practical tool is an opportunity of historic proportions.
The mobile device is no longer a novelty. Its time as a necessary component of our daily lives is here. As marketers we should be including it in our plans, indeed even building plans around it. There is one word that should always be part of the marketing lexicon: targeted.
Pervasive connectivity via personal mobile devices can provide back-end analytics that 10 years ago we only dreamed about, if we could dream that big.
QR codes are driving this connection now by providing a painless portal to additional information and offers.
This shift will not be painless, though.
QR to cue her
QR codes are currently being used to deliver mobile coupons, which will kill interest pretty quickly.
Mobile is a new medium, and using it to deliver an old idea such as a coupon, or even just a repurposed television spot, will drive shoppers away in short order.
The personal nature, always-on connectivity and location-awareness of mobile devices should inform our thinking as we learn how to use them to their fullest.
The critical element to successful use of QR codes and mobile is content – relevant, engaging and motivating content that attracts and persuades the viewer. Providing this means having a clear understanding of the consumer, implying that we need to be smarter about her than ever before.
As marketers, we have a unique opportunity to rethink how we connect with the consumer.
Mobile and QR codes allow one-to-one connectivity that is relevant, engaging and motivating for the shopper.
Making the most of the QR code opportunity will take investment, imagination and fortitude, but the payback will be incredible.

5 arguments on why mobile is indispensable to marketing plans

As the readers of this column will certainly agree, mobile marketing is no fad.
Rather, I believe that mobile marketing will – and must – become a central part of every successful marketing and visibility strategy, and I think it is well on its way to becoming just that.
However, the integration of mobile marketing into existing marketing strategies on a large scale will not happen spontaneously.
Instead, it will come about through a concerted effort to educate companies and other organizations about the benefits and unique qualities of mobile outreach.
This is not to say that the mobile marketing industry will somehow foist preferred tactics on unsuspecting businesses. The integration of mobile marketing will occur – and is occurring – naturally, organically.
Teach reach
Enterprises across the nation and the world are already realizing the tremendous reach and penetrating power of leveraging the mobile device for marketing purposes, and they are coming to this realization by discerning the trends and facts on the ground.
Hundreds of millions of Americans – nearly 90 percent of the country – use their mobile devices every day, and a solid majority of them express a desire to receive marketing messages of some sort through their mobile.
Redemption rates for mobile initiatives dwarf those of traditional marketing programs. Indeed, the cost per impression of a mobile campaign is often far lower than that of a mainstream media advertising campaign.
But you know this already.
The role we must play as marketers and mobile industry professionals is that of educators for the rest of the business community that has not yet fully embraced mobile marketing, or that portion which subscribes to the notion that mobile is somehow just a flash in the pan.
It is our job, in other words, to convince organizations that sitting on the sidelines of mobile is not an option, and that doing so carries an opportunity cost too high to sustain.
More constructively, it is also our job to continue touting the best practice and most effective strategies to get the most out of mobile communications.
Since standing on the street corner wearing a sandwich board is out, this proselytizing starts at the level of existing and potential clients.
In that vein, here are five effective arguments to present to clients on why mobile marketing ought to be an indispensible aspect of their marketing plans.
It is where your customers are
As I mentioned, mobile phone saturation is nearly complete in the developed world, and the use of mobile devices is on the rise just about everywhere.
This makes the mobile landscape the place of residence for most – not many, most – of the world’s consumers. Engaging in a mobile strategy opens up this vast market to any business that wants to participate in it.
By nature, it is targeted, relevant and actionable
Much as email and Internet marketing redefined direct marketing, the mobile space is further expanding businesses ability to engage customers in ways that they find appropriate and attractive.
Importantly, the mobile medium reaches purchase-ready consumers directly at the point of sale.
When we said this in the past, it used to mean that customers could have a marketing message on their device when they physically approached a retail outlet.
Now, with the maturity of mobile commerce and the flourishing of the mobile Internet, it means that customers can conduct the entire transaction cycle on their mobile device, from marketing to purchasing to consumption.
It is cost-effective
Mobile marketing features some of the lowest cost per touch and cost per impression of any marketing medium.
Without naming names, one retailer executed a mobile campaign with triple-digit ROI for less than 2 cents per impression.
Marketers that provide tactics with these kinds of returns for clients are also reaping financial rewards.
Agency holding company giant WPP, which owns JWT, Ogilvy and Y&R, posted 2 percent revenue gains in one of the softest marketing spend environments in years arguably on the strength of its mobile marketing performance.
It is brand-friendly
Since mobile marketing is still relatively new in the eyes of most consumers, it transmits a sense of innovation and forward-thinking for the brand that uses it.
Combine that with the ability of mobile marketing messages to be well-branded – a goal for every mobile marketing initiative – along with the high levels of brand interaction associated with mobile applications, and mobile marketing becomes a panacea for companies trying to define or strengthen their brand.
It is versatile
Speaking of applications, it is easy to forget that these ingenious, useful and ubiquitous marketing tools are barely four years old.
The Apple App Store, which has almost 250,000 applications for the iPhone and iPad, was not even open for business until 2008, a good year after the first iPhone was introduced.
Now, applications are the darlings of the marketing and advertising world, and an indispensible aspect of the smartphone experience.
This demonstrates that marketing opportunities on the mobile medium grow and change almost daily, and mobile continues to provide new and better ways to get a message out.
It is, in other words, one of the most versatile marketing mediums currently available.
MOBILE MARKETING IS not the next big thing, waiting for the next next big thing to come along and unseat it. It is the big thing, the game-changer.
In technological terms, mobile is the next evolution in communications, one that is redefining how, where and why people connect with one another.
It stands to reason, then, that it should have a similar effect on marketing and advertising.
Trends everywhere are pointing to this evolution, and businesses are on the path to widespread adoption. There will never be a year of mobile, or even a half-decade of mobile.
Mobile marketing will be a consistent reality for all businesses, everywhere. So it is time to let them know.

Waldorf Astoria expands mobile strategy with commerce-enabled iPhone app
Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts has debuted an iPhone application that lets guests book rooms and check-in prior to their arrival.
The application lets consumers browse 22 hotels via a full image gallery and read the history of each hotel. In addition, guests can search for discounted rates and special offers, book the property of their choice or modify existing reservations.
“The reason we decided to do this and all of our other apps is because we found that after many years of hearing that mobile is going to be important, we saw a huge increase in the percentage of our guests who were booking [via mobile],” said Chuck Sullivan, senior vice president for global online services at Hilton Worldwide, Washington.
“And so when we noticed this increase a year ago, we started to build out applications that were very different than everyone else’s app,” he said. “Many of our competitors have very brand-specific apps, but when consumers download that app, they are not able to book across the brand’s portfolio and we wanted to make sure that we can do that.”
Waldorf Astoria is Hilton Worldwide’s luxury brand of landmark hotels. Some of the most popular hotels and resorts include The Waldorf Astoria New York, Grand Wailea, Boca Raton Resort and Waldorf Astoria Park City.
Mobile concierge
Gold and Diamond HHonors members can exclusively check into guestrooms up to 36 hours in advance using an echeck-in feature.
Users can book their hotels by choosing which location they want to stay in.
